Highland Days is just around the corner and it is one of my favorite events that I love to attend. Living in Highland myself, it is a great way to connect with all the local folks that I see throughout the year. We are only two blocks away from the town center, so we put on our comfy shoes and take a stroll up to see that happening. It is the first weekend in October and the colored pumpkins are reminding us that the fall season is just around the corner. There are lots of activities for the kids and family.
The event is sponsored by The Greater Highland Crossroads Association (GHCA), which was formed in March 2002 to represent the folks living in Highland, rural portions of Fulton and Clarksville. Their goal is maintain our quality of life in our community while still keeping our “countrified” character. Did you know that Highland is 250 years old? It has a rich history that many of the locals love to share. The annual Highland directory is full of interesting details about many of the families and their contributions
to our town – take a moment to chat with some of the folks, they are glad to share their stories!
Over the last few years we have had a major face-lift and welcomed in a host of new vendors with our newly built town center which blends nicely with our historical buildings.
As to which event I like most; gee it is hard to choose. I always look forward to seeing what new events they added, so here is the scoop for this year’s events…and I got it straight from the “horses mouth.” Returning this year will be a mega-yard sale, organized by St. Mark’s Church Youth Group, to support their missionary projects. This
year’s fundraising efforts will help the youth group’s work in Costa Rica. The Hopkins Methodist Church choir will headline offerings from the entertainment stage, located at Highland Crossing. Theirs is a toe- tapping, show-stopping performance not to be missed. The family-friendly events include: story telling by Little Builders’ Learning Center, pony rides, creative art booths hosted by both Art Partners and KidzArt and the Shoppe of Horrors at the Highland Groomery, event sponsor. A Hay Ride will meander down country lanes and a children’s Halloween parade will march up Rt. 216. The Colonial Kids’ Zone, which will feature complimentary, games popular 250 years ago. A Contemporary Kids’ Zone, presented by the Fun Depot, will offer popular inflatable attractions, accessed by the purchase of a wristband.
Performing on the event stage will be area groups including a fast-paced martial arts demonstration by the Chung’s Martial Arts Academy. Also not to be missed are several dog obedience demonstrations by the PUPS Dog Obedience training group. Attendees can come hungry, as area restaurants and markets will be offering specialties throughout the day. Boarman’s Country Market will serve hot dogs and sodas, sold at old-time prices. As well as, other great tasting foods. Ethiopian specialties will be offered by Sorretti’s Restaurant. The beer garden will be serving two varieties of the top ranked Dogfish Head Brewery. Wine tastings will also be offered too. In addition to food, beverage, entertainment, family activities, and demonstrations, over 70 area businesses, artisans, and community groups will exhibit at the event.

So mark your for Saturday, October 2, 2010. In case of rain, the event will take place the following day, Sunday, October 3. Highland Days will run from 11:00am until 4:00pm. Location: at the crossroads
